The Project

Located within the Four Seasons Hotel Riyadh, Café Boulud marks the Middle East debut of Chef Daniel Boulud's celebrated dining concept, translating the language of the classic French brasserie through a distinctly contemporary lens. Designed by Rockwell Group, the interior unfolds through layered volumes of stone, bronze, mirrored surfaces, and softly articulated architecture, a space in which material richness and spatial sequence carry equal weight.

From the outset, lighting was conceived not as a layer applied to the architecture but as a constitutive part of it. Isometrix Lighting Design developed the illumination strategy in close collaboration with LEDFlex, delivering a fully linear scheme engineered to reinforce materiality, shape spatial transitions, and sustain atmosphere across dramatically varied environments, while maintaining strict source concealment throughout. Colour temperature is held consistently at 2700K across all zones, ensuring the interior reads as a single coherent composition rather than a collection of independently lit spaces.

The arrival sequence establishes this discipline immediately. Concealed Flexi Panel, our flexible LED Sheets are integrated flush within the surrounding stonework and signage, producing a quiet surface luminescence that grazes the marble at a low angle of incidence, enhancing depth and veining rather than competing with it. The external threshold is defined through an illuminated gradient; that lights up the space.

This journey continues to the octagonal cheese tasting room, where refrigerated displays, illuminated shelving, and wine selections sit beneath a mirrored vaulted ceiling. Lumen Line, our High CRI LED Light Engine selected for its colour-rendering fidelity, delivers warm vertical illumination across the primary display systems, while Nano Flex, our ultra-slim 2mm wide PCB Engine are concealed within the finer millwork, eliminating shadow breaks and allowing the space to read as luminously seamless despite the complexity of its composition.

As the restaurant opens further, sweeping bronze ceiling forms guide movement through the dining spaces in layered horizontal bands. At the centre, the circular bar sits beneath a suspended ceiling feature traced in Ultimo Neon 22 3D, routed to follow the fluid overhead geometry without interpolation or visible banding, transforming the canopy into a single continuous luminous volume that asserts presence without introducing glare into adjacent sightlines.

Throughout the wider interior, Optico Neon 35 3D is integrated within the cove profiles, its wide beam optic and diffused output delivers uniform, glare-controlled illumination across textured wall panels, arches, and dark timber detailing. In the more intimate dining zones, Ultimo Neon 16 introduces a secondary layer within the upper architectural transitions, reinforcing the verticality of the surrounding panelling and lifting the ceiling plane with a continuous warm glow.

Across Café Boulud, the lighting scheme holds its discipline from threshold to table, every decision in service of the interior, never in competition with it. A scheme of this resolution is the product of genuine collaboration: Isometrix's design intent met at every turn by LEDFlex's ability to engineer product that performs exactly as the architecture demands. What remains is a hospitality environment where warmth, enclosure, and luminous depth are experienced first as sensation, and only later understood as craft. Restraint, when this precisely executed, becomes its own form of presence.
